DEFINING THE GOSPEL: THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS CHRIST

The word “gospel” means good news. But what exactly is the good news that the Bible calls the Gospel?

The Gospel is not primarily a religious system, a set of rules, or instructions for becoming a better person. It is the good news of what God has accomplished for humanity through His Son, Jesus Christ.

The Apostle Paul gives us one of the clearest summaries of the Gospel:

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved... For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”

1 Corinthians 15:1–4

At the heart of the Gospel, therefore, is Jesus Christ: His death for our sins, His burial, and His resurrection from the dead.

This is why the Gospel is good news. Salvation does not begin with what man must accomplish for God; it begins with what God has already accomplished for man through Jesus Christ.

Jesus came into the world, died for our sins, was buried, and rose again. Through faith in Him, a person receives eternal life and passes from death unto life.

Jesus said:

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”

John 5:24

Notice the certainty of Christ’s words: the person who believes “hath everlasting life.” Eternal life is not merely a promise that the believer hopes to receive someday after death. It is a present possession received through faith in Jesus Christ.

This is the good news of the Gospel.

BIBLICAL FOUNDATIONS: KEY SCRIPTURES EXPLAINING THE GOSPEL

The Gospel is not based upon human philosophy, religious tradition, or personal opinion. Its foundation is the Word of God.

Paul declared:

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth...”

Romans 1:16

The Gospel is God’s message of salvation, and its focus is Christ. Perhaps one of the best-known declarations of this truth is found in John 3:16:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

God loved. God gave His Son. Christ accomplished the work. The individual is called to believe.

This agrees perfectly with Ephesians 2:8–9:

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Salvation is by grace through faith. It is not a reward for religious achievement or good works. It is the gift of God.

This does not mean that good works have no place in the Christian life. They do. But good works are not the price we pay to obtain salvation. They are to flow from the new life we have received in Christ.

The order is important: we are not saved because we have done good works; rather, having been saved by grace through faith, we are called to walk in the life God has prepared for us.

The Gospel therefore directs our confidence away from ourselves and toward Jesus Christ and what He has accomplished.

DISTINGUISHING THE GOSPEL FROM RELIGION AND HUMAN EFFORTS

One of the greatest obstacles to understanding the Gospel is the idea that salvation must somehow be earned. Human religion often asks, “What must I do to make myself acceptable to God?” The Gospel announces what God has already done through Christ. There is an enormous difference between these two approaches.

If salvation could be earned through human goodness, religious observance, ceremonies, personal discipline, or keeping rules, then salvation would become a reward for human achievement. But Scripture removes every basis for such boasting.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith... Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Ephesians 2:8–9

Grace means that salvation originates in God’s provision, not human merit. Faith does not mean that we earn salvation by believing. Faith receives what God has freely provided in Christ. This is why the finished work of Jesus Christ is so central to the Gospel. The believer’s confidence is not, “I have done enough for God to save me.” Our confidence is in Christ and what He has done.

On the cross, Jesus declared:

“It is finished.”

John 19:30

The Gospel does not call us to complete an unfinished work of salvation. Christ accomplished the work necessary for our salvation. Therefore, our assurance must rest in Him rather than in our religious performance.

Religion can place people under the burden of continually wondering whether they have prayed enough, sacrificed enough, behaved well enough, or performed enough religious duties to deserve eternal life.

The Gospel directs us away from confidence in ourselves and toward confidence in Jesus Christ. Salvation is not man climbing upward to reach God. It is the good news of what God has accomplished for man in Christ.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A PERSON BELIEVES THE GOSPEL?

Believing the Gospel is more than agreeing that Jesus once existed. Biblical faith rests upon Jesus Christ and what God has accomplished through Him.

Scripture says:

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life...”

John 3:36

Again, notice the word “hath.” The believer has everlasting life. The Apostle John makes this even clearer:

“And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life...”

1 John 5:11–12

Eternal life is in Jesus Christ. Therefore, to receive Christ is to receive the life that is in Him. The believer does not remain spiritually where he was before believing. Scripture describes salvation as passing “from death unto life” (John 5:24).

This is why the Gospel is much more than an invitation to adopt Christianity as a religion. It is the message through which people hear about Jesus Christ, believe in Him, and receive eternal life.

And because eternal life is found in Christ, the believer’s assurance ultimately rests in Christ rather than in changing emotions, circumstances, or human performance.

THE GOSPEL IS FOR EVERYONE

The Gospel is not restricted to one nation, race, culture, social class, or geographical region. Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world, and the Gospel is to be proclaimed to all people.

Before His ascension, Jesus told His disciples:

“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”

Mark 16:15

This global commission remains at the heart of Christian ministry.

The Gospel must cross geographical, cultural, economic, and social boundaries because every person needs the life that is found in Christ. This is why biblical teaching and evangelism must never become confined to a particular community or group of people. The message of Christ belongs in every nation.

From cities to villages, churches to homes, classrooms to digital platforms, the good news of Jesus Christ must continue to be proclaimed. The message remains the same: Christ died for our sins, He was buried, He rose again, and eternal life is available through faith in Him.

GROWING IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF JESUS CHRIST

Receiving eternal life is the beginning of the Christian life, not the end of our growth. After believing the Gospel, Christians should grow in their understanding of Christ and the Word of God.

Scripture says:

“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.”

2 Peter 3:18

Spiritual growth does not make us more saved. Neither does increased biblical knowledge cause God to give us more eternal life.

Rather, we grow because we already possess life in Christ.

As believers study Scripture, they become increasingly established in the truth of what God has accomplished for them. They learn who they are in Christ, how to walk by faith, how to live according to God’s Word, and how to communicate the Gospel accurately to others.

This is why careful Bible study matters.

Scripture should not be approached merely to defend traditions or support ideas we have already decided to believe. We should study faithfully, paying attention to context and allowing Scripture to explain Scripture.

The goal is not simply to accumulate religious information. It is to grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ and become equipped to communicate His truth faithfully to others.

THE GOOD NEWS REMAINS GOOD NEWS

The Gospel is good news because its foundation is not human achievement but Jesus Christ.

Christ died for our sins.

He was buried.

He rose again the third day.

Through faith in Him, we receive eternal life.

Therefore, the question is not whether we can become good enough to earn salvation. The question is whether we believe the testimony God has given concerning His Son.

“And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”

1 John 5:11

If you have believed in Jesus Christ, continue growing in the knowledge of who He is and what He has accomplished for you. Study the Scriptures. Become established in the truth. Grow in your understanding of Christ. And share this good news with others. The Gospel is still the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes.
